Paolo Nutini - Caustic Love
by Loli Lucaciu
Paolo Nutini, Scotland's 27-year-old musical “darling," released his latest album Caustic Love this past April. While the album has already received favorable reviews all over Europe, peaking on musical charts from Hungary all the way to Ireland, the United States is just now warming up to Nutini’s soulful sounds. Nutini, referred to by the BBC as "arguably Scotland's biggest musician right now," incorporates pop-rock, soul and blues tunes in his new album. The musician spices up his songs with unexpected twists, as exemplified by the addition of Janelle Monae’s edgy voice and rhythm to “Fashion” or the powerful burst of soulful anger in “Iron Sky”. This latter single also benefits from a well-executed music video and a skillful audio sampling of the 1940 Charlie Chaplin film The Great Dictator. With his versatility and his charming raspy voice, Paolo Nutini can be expected to continue his musical ascension far beyond Europe’s boundaries.
